Catalogue Note
From their first correspondence in January 1880, Greenaway quickly became one of Ruskin's favourite protégés. Ruskin was very taken by her idyllic depictions of young girls, and here Greenaway embellishes his copy with just such a figure, finely executed in ink and watercolour.
Over their friendship, which continued until Ruskin's death in 1900, Ruskin is said to have written over five hundred letters to Greenaway, with her sending perhaps double that number in response.
