Catalogue Note
The translation of this French work was made in collaboration with the author and was first published in 1930. A second edition was revised in 1949 with greater input from the author and this third edition bears Eliot's statement "The alterations to the English text of this edition have been made by the author himself, and tend to make the translation more literal than in previous editions".
The talented singer Violet Schiff (neé Zillah Beddington, 1874-1962) was the second wife of the writer, translator and patron Sydney Schiff (see lot 26). They were good friends of the Eliots, their circle also including Wyndham Lewis, Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murry, and Frederick Delius. Frequent travellers, they settled at Abinger Manor, near Dorking, in 1934.
