Catalogue Note

An excellent association copy, inscribed by Eliot five days before publication, and linking the greatest poet and (arguably) the greatest critic of the last century. Richards was an enthusiastic admirer of Eliot's work from the beginning. Having read Ara Vos Prec he was determined to meet the poet and persuade him to join the Cambridge faculty in some capacity. "Richards took upon himself the role of critic and explicator of [Eliot's] poetry so that, within a very few years, his name became closely associated with that of Eliot" (Peter Ackroyd, T.S. Eliot).
