Catalogue Note
FIRST EDITION, inscribed to General Georges Ernest Boulanger (1837-1891). Boulanger was a prominent and controversial politician who maintained an aggressive anti-German stance. He was war minister from January 1886 to May 1887 and Eiffel sent him this article in the hope of convincing a high-profile public figure to support the construction of his tower for the Paris Exposition of 1889.
This was Eiffel's first publication about the tower, in which he describes the proposed methods of both construction and deconstruction (it was originally proposed that it would be removed in 1909). The paper was presented to the Société des Ingénieurs civils in March 1885.
