Catalogue Note

THE RECIPIENT IS PROBABLY CONRAD'S GOOD FRIEND, FIRST BIOGRAPHER, AND TRANSLATOR, the cultured and always impeccably attired Gérard Jean-Aubry (née Jean-Frédéric-Émile Aubry, 1882-1950), whom he first met in 1918. The character Jean Peyrol in The Rover (1923) is probably named after him. Jean-Aubry's Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters, appeared three years after Conrad's death in 1927, followed by numerous other works in later years. The printer H.J. Goulden originally printed The Dover Patrol without a title-page. Conrad objected and, consequently, a second printing was produced which included both a half-title and title-page. THIS COPY INCLUDES AN ADDITIONAL TITLE-PAGE which appears to be an unknown variant.
