Catalogue Note

Supposedly written by Johnson, the work is now attributed to James Boswell.

It is recorded that a bookseller in Glasgow bought some "odds and ends" in a sale in 1825. Among these was "discovered a quantity of loose sheets of the Ode. He was able to piece together a few complete copies, but the greater part of them was so injured by dirt and damp as to be useless" (see Rothschild 460).
