Catalogue Note

Nancy Astor (1879-1964) was the first woman to sit as an MP in the House of Commons. Despite their fundamental political differences, a friendship between Shaw and Nancy Astor developed from 1926 or 1927 and was to endure until Shaw's death in 1950.

Writing, in 1941, to Upon Sinclair Shaw, Shaw noted: "Nancy is a unique and amusing phenomenon. It would take me a whole chapter to describe her. Her hospitality is utterly indiscriminate as far as class and party is concerned... I refused all her invitations until I happened to meet her in person at a London party. In ten minutes we were as thick as thieves..." (see ed. J.P. Wearing, Bernard Shaw and Nancy Astor (2005), p.xv)
