Catalogue Note

Loosely inserted is Sassoon's accompanying letter to Faber (on Heytesbury House headed notepaper, 21 August 1939), sent just before the outbreak of the Second World War: "I am sending you my little book of verse, hoping that it will be some compensation for my inability to do any prose since this Hitlerism blighted my mental agility. Must we fight these barbarians? Anyhow, poetry will survive their atrocities...".  Faber was of course the publisher of Sassoon's mainstream poetry and also of his autobiographical writings Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man and Memoirs of an Infantry Officer.
