Catalogue Note

The recipient is Thomas Balston, who had been in the army with the author's father Philip Powell. It was Balston who suggested Balliol College Oxford as the most suitable destination for Anthony after Eton; as a director at Duckworth he also facilitated Anthony's apprenticeship there.
