Description

  • Mother Goose. New York: McClure, Phillips & Company, 1901
  • Paper
4to (276 x 217mm.), FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE (dated "1901" on both the title and copyright pages, with Humpty-Dumpty on the verso of the dedication leaf, and 4pp. following colophon), numerous illustrations by Denslow, original blue cloth backed pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, marginal tear to dedication leaf not affecting text, extremities of boards slightly worn and spine lightly faded

Catalogue Note

On each illustration appears Denslow's trademark device of a stylised seahorse, or hippocampus (normally alongside the initials "DEN").

Denslow was the first illustrator of Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz, for which author and artist shared the copyright. However, the two men fell out over the division of the royalties from the 1902 stage adaptation of the novel, and never worked together again.
