Translations of Heidi into other European languages began to appear within only a few years of the publication of the two volumes in German over 1880 and 1881 (see previous lot).
The first English translation was published by Spyri's German publisher Friedrich Andreas Perthes for W. Swan Sonnenschein of London. While the exact date of this translation is not known, a review of the first volume in The Westminster Review in 1883 lists the date of publication as 1882, just two years after it had appeared in Germany.
Copies of this edition of the first volume are now notoriously scarce, since it was quickly followed by this edition with both volumes published under Sonnenschein's own imprint. While Perthes seemingly continued to print the sheets for this edition, here the German plates which he has used in his first English translations (which retained captions in Gothic script and page numbers reflecting their location in the German copies) are replaced with English ones in keeping with the format of the whole book.
