large 4to (333 x 227mm.), FIRST EDITION (dated "1939" on both title-page and publisher's imprint), illustrated by the author, original pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, DUST-JACKET, slightly worn at head and foot of spine, a few very minor marks on lower board, neat contemporary ownership inscription on front free endpaper, dust-jacket slightly darkened with a few minor tears and chips and with price crossed out on upper flap

SCARCE IN DUST-JACKET. 

The first book in the much-loved Madeline series of seven titles, the last of which was published in 1999 after Bemelmans' death. Four of the books, including this first story of Madeline's case of appendicitis, supplied the plot for the successful 1998 film adaptation.
