Catalogue Note

Bannerman's most famous story was written on the two day journey from the hill station of Kodaikanal to Madras as a means of entertaining the author's two young daughters. While she never intended the tale and her accompanying watercolour illustrations to be published, a friend took the story to London and sold it to the editor E.V. Lucas. The book was immediately successful, and appeared in the United States only a year later. Bannerman however, having effectively sold the copyright, received no royalties beyond the initial price of £5 the publisher had paid for the book.
