Catalogue Note

"Antonio Dias' work seems to reduce expressive quality to rational and calculated shapes. He stated that in Paris, 'the distance took me to the black box, the black painting. I did not want to let out anything visceral.' A vocabulary of geometric shapes intruded in images of power, friction and libido." (1)

Painted in Milan, where he settled in 1968, Mirage testifies to Dias' mastery for interweaving political issues with biographical references and personal reflections into a conceptual multimedia-based oeuvre fraught with formal elegance and intellectual rigor.
