one representing two putti holding grapevine, signed E. Avolio, for Eugene Avolio, the other, a female and male putti holding love birds, signed Avolio, for Luigi Avolio, each on a gilt bronze base

Catalogue Note

The sculptor Eugenio Avolio (1876-1929) and then Luigi Avolio produced in the 20th century many silver sculptures inspired by 17th century Italian sculptures.  A pair of reclining river gods, also attributed to Luigi Avolio, were sold Christie's Rome, 6 June 2002, lot 465 and magnificent group of seven figure embelmatic of the sea were included in the same sale (lot 470).
