Catalogue Note

'You could say that these paintings are about the weather, and that would be true. But they are also about everything: about love and loss, the intense experience of place and people' (Aidan Dunne [intro.], Melita Denaro: This Hallowed Evening, Taylor Galleries, exh. cat., 2006).

Each year Melita Denaro journeys to the Isle of Doagh, a peninsula on the north coast of Ireland, and to the same field where she paints the dramatic landscape of this wild Atlantic coastline. Working on small panels, she translates her experiences of the environment into intense, atmospheric paintings, later worked into larger canvases from the sanctuary of her studio. They are clearly the creations of someone who has immersed herself within the environment and surrendered herself to the elements, conveying a sense of the vastness and isolation felt in such a climatic landscape. Her return to this same field, year after year, is a testament to her steadfastness and commitment to truth. These highly charged works display a sensitive disposition to the varying qualities of light, and the painterly surfaces and changing brushstrokes reflect the weather's tempestuous nature and its impact upon the land.
