Catalogue Note
The present sketches relates to a series of sculptures, Women of Belfast, that McWilliam produced in response to the bombing of the Abercorn restaurant in Belfast during one of the most violet periods of the Troubles. Most of those killed or injured were women - 'the victim of man's stupidity' (McWilliam). The work that followed became some of the most personal and renowned of his career, with his focus on the effect of the bomb blast leading to a dynamic and powerful form of representation.
