Catalogue Note
Hilary Pyle believes the present work to be a self-portrait. As she wrote, 'Jack Yeats had been including small self-portraits in his work, whether humorous or otherwise, from an early stage. With the growing introspection of his painting in oil it was not unnatural that he should embark on studies such as these, though they never culminated in an oil self-portrait, and were not published until after his death, even though prepared like illustrations' (Pyle, op.cit., p.305).
