Catalogue Note
As with The Village (lot 23), The Start and The Finish (preceding lot) are original illustrations used by Yeats' sisters, Lily and Lolly, for their Arts and Crafts enterprise, the Cuala Press. Typical of Yeats' work at the time, they adopt an elongated format, a strong outline and celebrate life in the West of Ireland with characteristic humour. The designs were issued as a line-block print, handcoloured by Yeats himself or by one of the craftswomen, Molly Gill or Eileen Colm, at the Cuala Press. They proved very popular and issued as individual prints, Christmas cards and calendars. 'The simplicity of the drawing is influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and lends itself to reproduction. The unpretentious style was very influential on Irish visual culture and the portrayal of rural Ireland in the early 20th century' (Dr. Roisin Kennedy, February 2013)
