Catalogue Note

Woven thangkas such as lots 740 and 741 were created in Chinese ateliers in the late 19th/early 20th Century. The design and subject matter of these woven thangkas are based on the early 18th Century woodblock prints from Narthang Monastery in Central Tibet, depicting the lineage of Panchen Lamas and their pre-incarnations.

It is possible that the current work and lot 741 are from the same set as another important woven thangka depicting Lobzang Palden Yeshe with identical silk mounting, see Christie's Paris, 9th June 2015, lot 346. Also compare a woven thangka depicting Sakya Pandita in the Potala Palace collection in Lhasa, see David Jackson, A History of Tibetan Painting, Vienna, 1996, p. 237, fig 118.
