Catalogue Note

On an apple green ground Munir-al-Mulk, prime minister to Nizam Sikandar Jah, offers obeisance with folded palms to Nizam Ali Khan Asaf Jah II (1762-1803). According to Jagdish Mittal, Venkatachellam was the favorite painter of Ali Khan and was paid an annual jagir of 12,000 rupees for his services. The present work reveals the expressiveness and clarity of Venkatachellam's oeuvre and may be a work from his hand or an artist working closely in his circle.
