Catalogue Note

This painting probably of a Sufi poet or scholar depicts him standing against a verdigris sky and small hillside with just a hint of landscape on the low horizon line. He holds a single red leather bound volume tucked under one arm and a long thin cane close to his chest.

The painting was likely owned at one time by the French dealer Georges Demotte as evidenced by the panel of lapis blue and gold arabesques just below the poet’s feet which was once certainly a small section of a border from a folio of the Farhang-i-Jahangiri Persian language lexicon created for the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1608. These very recognizable borders were trimmed and laid-in to enlarge Mughal paintings in Demotte’s possession. A lovely quality miniature possibly attributable to Miskina.
