Catalogue Note

An illustration based on a Ragamala series. A royal couple embracing as they walk to their outdoor bed within a palace courtyard.  The architectural palace windows and niches compartmentalized in reds and blues, containing gold vessels. The ladies of the zenana showing close affection to each other and conversing.

Likely this painting was originally one folio from a ragamala series, or was possibly an individual miniature, its inscription being unreadable. The subject was based on a popular Malwa theme “Malava Ragini” and as the name suggests likely originated in Malwa, the Malava country.
