  • A Central Indian Buff Sandstone Fragmentary Figural Relief

depicting acolytes of Vishnu, with a kneeling princely figure holding a gada and wearing a crown, flanked by a gana holding a parasol above his head and a female chauri-bearer, a further fragmentary figure with a naga canopy to the right, a female figure with a quiver of arrows above flanked by two standing male figures, on the right holding a chakra, a further headless figure behind, Hanuman with head defaced to the right, the fragmentary fingers of the original central figure at the top

Condition

Fragmentary, as viewed, with losses to head of figure at upper right and figure at far left. Loss to Hanuman's face and tail at lower right, and further areas of scattered losses to figures throughout.

Catalogue Note

Two of the figures depicted may be personified attributes of Vishnu, but although the wheel-bearer Chakrapurusha can be identified, the mace-bearer is male (rather than the female Gadanari) and of an unusual princely disposition.
