the long panel in relief with Buddha at center flanked by a bearded and turbaned Vajrapani/Herakles on his left, carrying a thunderbolt, and Indra on his right beating a large drum, with monks, attendants and worshippers overlooking the scene

Condition

Wear and accretion overall. Minor losses to some of the figure's hands, fingertips and tips of nose, consistent with age.

Catalogue Note

This scene represents Buddha's arrival at Rajagriha to meet King Bimbisara, where he was greeted by Indra, who, in the guise of a young Brahmin, welcomed Buddha and led him into the city singing his praises.
