Catalogue Note
After World War I, van Dongen distanced himself from his Fauve past and embraced a form of Naturalism, albeit a highly stylized version. Portraits of women emerged as his principal subject. Executed during the height of van Dongen’s fame in 1920s Paris, Portrait de femme exemplifies the idealized aesthetic that would characterize van Dongen’s depictions of women for years to come. As observed by the curator Anita Hopmans, “his women…were often the same idealized type: tall, slender, a small head on a long neck, large eyes outlined in black” (Anita Hopmans, All Eyes on Kees van Dongen, Rotterdam, 2010, p. 148).
