Condition

Oil and mixed media on board. Surface in generally good condition, colors are bright. The extreme edges of the board are slightly worn, not visible in the frame. Board has bowed very slightly towards the center, not visible in frame. There is paper on the reverse of the board bearing a Chinese inscription and stamp reading "The Paris American Art..." This paper exhibits multiple losses and darkening from age. Under UV light; active pigments fluoresce, no apparent inpainting visible.

The present work is a sketch for the set design for the first scene of the first act of La Légende de Saint Christophe (1920), an opera by Vincent D'Indy for which Maurice Denis designed the sets and costumes.
