  • oil on canvas
  • 117 by 94.2cm., 46 by 37 1/8 in.

Provenance

Baroness Dorthea Bodenhausen-Degener, Germany
Private Collection (by descent from the above; sale: Sotheby's, New York, 5th November 2004, lot 188)
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

Literature

Ronald Feltkamp, Théo van Rysselberghe, Catalogue raisonné, Brussels, 2003, no. 1910-036, illustrated p. 391

Condition

The canvas is not lined. There is an 11cm-long repaired tear to the centre of the upper left quadrant and a further 8cm-long repaired tear to the left of Mme von Bodenhausen's right cheek, both of which have associated retouchings visible under UV light. UV examination reveals a further small spot of retouching to her neck. There is some very minor paint shrinkage to some of the blue and green pigments of the dress and a tiny paint loss to one of the flowers. Otherwise, this work is in overall fairly good condition. Colours: overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though there is slightly more green and less blue in the original.

Catalogue Note

The present work was originally part of a larger canvas entitled Mme Bodenhausen et ses enfants (see R. Feltkamp, op. cit., no. 1910-021, illustrated p. 389). Luli grew up to be a great beauty and star, using the stage name Luli Deste after she moved to Hollywood, and starring in a number of movies including Thunder in the City with Edward G. Robinson in 1937.
