Condition

The canvas is not lined. UV examination reveals no evidence of retouching. Some colours in the upper right quadrant are fluorescing. There is some fine craquelure lower right and some further paint shrinkage with associated paint loss in the centre right of the composition. Tiny paint loss 1cm from the vase in the upper left quadrant of composition. There is some frame rubbing along the four edges, invisible when framed. Overall this work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The present work was most likely acquired directly from Valtat's dealer Ambroise Vollard by the artist, poet, photographer and patron Eugène Boch. A friend to many fellow artists of his generation, Boch is perhaps best remembered today for the portrait Vincent van Gogh painted of him, which hangs today in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
