Catalogue Note

Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming sale on October 22, 1918.

Early tonneau hinged watches in oversized format, such as the present lot, are emblematic of Patek Philippe's commercially successful and classic early productions. The shape recalls pieces made for the illustrious Rio de Janeiro retailer, Gondolo & Laboriau, for whom the 'Gondolo' term referring to 'shape' watches such as the present was coined. It is estimated approximately 100 such pieces were produced, with about one-third of them destined for Brazil.
