Patek Philippe's Advanced Research team strives to improve the isochronism of mechanical watches employing cutting-edge materials in their pioneering annual calendar in-house movements. In 2006 Patek Philippe released the second generation of the 'Advanced Research', reference 5350 in an edition of 300 all in pink gold, fitted with a Silicon escape wheel and Spiromax balance spring, and allows the wearer to admire the technological wonders by featuring a magnified aperture to the sapphire crystal display back. The Ref 5450 was then released in 2008 in a limited series of 300 pieces by adding the Silinvar lever, which transfer energy from the escape wheel to the balance wheel, resulting in the highly efficient Pulsomax escapement.
