Condition

Very good condition overall with some minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. A few very minor scratches to the surface, and some surface dirt in the crevices. Very crisp and fresh cast, good in all details. Bronze which can be highly recommended.

Catalogue Note

En 1559, le marbre antique est mentionné pour la première fois quand le sculpteur Willem van Tétrode en réalise une réduction en bronze pour Philippe II d’Espagne. En 1677, le marbre est transféré de Rome à Florence et intègre ensuite la Tribunes des Offices. Le sujet connut un grand succès au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles et notamment en France. Vers 1630, Hubert Le Sueur en réalise une copie grandeur nature en bronze pour le cardinal de Richelieu et, en 1638, François Perrier lui consacre trois planches dans un recueil d'estampes à l'eau-forte illustrant les plus belles statues romaines.
