Condition
Very nice and crisp casts in overall good condition. Some minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling with remains of an old dark brown and green laquer bearing a few scratches. A few natural casting flaws to the bronzes. The hind legs of both horses appear to have been restored around the ankles. The ebonized wooden bases are modern.

Catalogue Note
Deux magnifiques exemplaires de ce cheval cabré sont conservés au Ca d'Oro à Venise et au Bode Muesum de Berlin (inv. n°2165), un autre se trouve à New York, au Metropolitain Museum, dans la collection d'Erwin Untermeyer. Wixom suggère que l'artiste s'est inspiré du modèle de Bellerophon et Pegase de Bertoldo di Giovanni (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienne) réalisé entre 1480 et 1485. Ces bronzes se distinguent par des fontes naturalistes, rendant avec précision les moindres détails tels la crinière ondoyante ou les naseaux gonflés par l'effort, tout à fait caractéristiques des bronzes issus des ateliers du Nord de l'Italie, au XVIe siècle. Jadis successivement considérée comme des oeuvres d'Andrea Riccio (Padoue, 1470-1532), puis Bartolomeo Bellano (Padoue, 1437/1438 - 1496), ces bronzes sont maintenant attribués de façon convainquante à Severo da Ravenna (actif à Ravenne de 1496 - 1538) par B. Jestaz. Le cheval cabré est souvent chevauché par un cavalier, parfois rajouté postérieurement.
