  • bronze doré, ciselé et gravé; sur des socles en bronze doré orné de mascarons en faut relief
  • Haut. 34 et 33,5 cm; height. 13 1/2 and 13 1/4 in.

Condition

Very good condition overall with some minor oxidation and dirt in the crevices at several places consistent with age and handling. A few fine hairline fissures and casting flaws to the bronzes at several places in particular to the small base of the right figure. One small break to the tail of one of the pelicans. The socles cast separately.

Catalogue Note

Ces allégories s'inscrivent dans la tradition des bronzes vénitiens, notamment par le soin apporté aux détails, les formes amples et l'attitude gracieuse des deux femmes et un sens de l'ornement fort marqué. Dans la religion chrétienne, le pélican symbolise la Charité, l'une des trois vertus théologales avec la Foi et l'Espérance. Ces bronzes présentent de grandes similitudes stylistiques avec la vertu de la Tempérance conservée à la Fondation Bemberg, à Toulouse.
