Catalogue Note

The present work is related to a 1901 lithograph in the collection of the State Museum of Ukranian Fine Arts, Kiev (gr 2587; see Rimgaila Salys, Leonid Pasternak, The Russian Years, 1875-1921, A Critical Study and Catalogue, Oxford, 1999, no. 9). Salys also notes that an untraced pastel, also dated 1901, exists (Salys, no. 19). The same composition was also used as one of the twelve illustrations in Israel Cohen's Jewish Life in Modern Times, published in 1914.
