Catalogue Note
Lou G. Siegel opened his eponymous restaurant on 38th Street near 7th Avenue in 1917. The Kosher restaurant, which served Eastern European fare, became a favorite haunt of the Garment District, known for its cloth napkins, chandeliers and walnut-paneled walls hung with paintings and drawings.
The present lot was among the works hanging on the walls when the 38th Street restaurant closed its doors in 1996. A New York Times story that appeared on the day of the restaurant’s closing included a photo of staff members removing this painting from the walls of the venerable institution.
Lou G. Siegel's Glatt Kosher continues to this day as a caterer based in Brooklyn, New York.
