Catalogue Note

While under the direction of Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier looked to the animal kingdom for much of their inspiration. After fashioning a flamingo brooch set in diamonds and colored stones for the Duchess of Windsor in 1940, the tropical bird became a popular motif for the design house. The current example, fashioned from coral and black lacquer, features one of the most common color schemes employed by Cartier in the 1940s. For additional information on the Duchess of Windsor's flamingo brooch, see The Jeweled Menagerie: The World of Animals in Gems by Suzanne Tennenbaum and Janet Zapata, page 188.
