Condition
Overall in excellent original condition showing very gentle use. This sideboard is part of a larger collection acquired as part of a long relationship with George Nakashima. Five works from the collection of Dorothy G. Roby appear in this auction catalogue. The current condition of this cabinet shows the acute attention and care of the owners. The wood selection used to execute this work presents with extraordinary figuring and deeply saturated hues throughout ranging in colors from warm caramel hues to vivid reds as seen in the catalogue illustration. Unique elements including minor fissures have been retained to the boards used to create the doors of the magnificent work. The case with a few very minute surface scratches and edge indentations from gentle use. The front edge with a wonderful free edge with a wonderful natural knot retained to the proper left edge. One minor edge indentation to the underside of the edge, which is not visible once the piece is righted. The back of this work is beautifully finished utilizing the same richly colored walnut of the case, and the piece as a result can be used as a room divider. The proper left back edge of the reverse with minor evidence of white paint. The central compartment is fitted with four fixed drawers, and the proper right and left compartments with four removable shelves with original hardware. Two of the shelves with very minor surface scratches from likely caused by the fastening hardware. A wonderful example of Nakashima’s design with acute attention to both the design in the wood selection and function. -----
