Catalogue Note

Stephen Tyree Early (1889-1951) was an American journalist and government official. He was the longest serving White House Press Secretary, serving under Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1945, and again under President Harry S. Truman in 1950. The Dehua figure was a gift to him from President Roosevelt who in turn had been presented with the sculpture in the early 1940s by the United States Ambassador to the Republic of China.
