A CARVED HUANGHUALI 'DRAGON' BOX AND COVER QING DYNASTY, 18TH/ 19TH CENTURY

of rectangular form, the top of the cover boldly carved in relief with a writhing four-clawed dragon amidst clouds set within a beaded frame, the sides of the cover carved with striding chilong, the front of the box with a pair of confronting dragons and further chilong on the remaining sides, the interior with a single fitted tray, baitong hinges, bail handles and a circular lock plate with cloud-form hasp 

The box and cover are in overall good condition. The joints with old filled consolidation some of which is now dry leaving small openings at the top and base between the panels along the corners. There is an small filled patch on the exterior back panel corner of the box. The surface with appropriate wear. It is likely that the back hinges have been replaced.
