the ruyi-shaped cover finely and deeply carved to the top with four carp leaping out of tumultuous swirling waves, the sides of the cover and box carved with floret diaper, the interior and base lacquered black

Spink & Son Ltd., London (according to label).

Condition

The rims of the box and the cover with extensive chips/losses, revealing the base of the lacquer. There are other minor chips elsewhere across the extremities of the carving. There are sympathetic areas of re-lacquer, including the upper and lower edges of the box and cover. Minor age cracks running vertically down the rims. The colour of the lacquer is of a slightly richer red tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
