of quatrefoil form, the domed cover deftly carved with various levels of relief, depicting a quatrefoil panel of three figures in a sampan beneath a wutong tree on a river in a mountainous landscape, above the sides similarly carved with figures in fenced gardens in mountainous river landscapes, the rims and foot encircled with key-fret bands, lacquered black to the interior and base

Condition

Both the rims of the box and the cover had been broken and restored, with visible areas of re-lacquer, cracks and associated chips/losses. The rim of the box with numerous chips revealing the base of the lacquer, the largest measuring 2x0.4cm. There are other smaller chips elsewhere across the surface. The rims of both the box and the cover with extensive overpaint. The interior may have been repainted to stabilise the cracks. There are other age cracks running vertically down the rim of the box and the cover.
