embroidered with a slender vase decorated with a band of lotus scrolls resting on an openwork stand, containing three leafy branches issuing peony flowers and buds with white pink-tipped petals save for two delicately embroidered with seed pearls, surrounded by a turquoise bowl on a stand overflowing with finger citrons, a rectangular scroll weight and a bi disk attached to a tasselled silk cord, the top left corner with an inscription and marked with three seals, all between two diapered bands

Condition

It is in overall good condition with some expected foxing and occasional loose threads. There are some missing seed pearls to the peony and threads loss especially to the brown stand of the vase. The kesi also has some strengthened old creases, as well as typical wear and tear. It has been remounted, which is typical for its age and type.

A silk hanging scroll, similarly embroidered to depict a vase holding flowers, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Silk Tapestry and Embroidery in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1998, pl. 27; and a larger example was sold at Christie’s London, 4th November 2008, lot 138.
