the speckled dark brown clay finely modelled as a broad leaf, its undulating edge mildly curled up and bearing a spray of mallow at various stages of bloom in buff coloured clay, the reverse with a network of pronounced pinnate veins and two stamps, Chen and Mingyuan, stamped in relief on the stem

Catalogue Note

Chen Mingyuan is recorded as being one of the leading and most versatile potters active in the early Qing period. Best known for their thin bodies and fine craftsmanship, his vessels were highly sought after among the literati and huge amount of reproductions were made through the ages. See Lai Suk Yee and Terese Tse Bartholomew, The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Yixing Zisha Stoneware, Art Museum, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 2015, cat. nos. 155-156 for two similar leaf-shaped dishes and cat. nos. 125 and 128 with comparable Chen Mingyuan seals, both dated to the Republican period.
