Description

  • Philip Powell
  • Bed
  • walnut
comprising head board, foot board and two siderails

Provenance

Commissioned directly from the artist
Thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Overall in good condition. The wood surfaces with a few surface scratches and minor abrasions consistent with age and gentle use. The bed was commissioned directly from the artist for a particular residence and minor design details are likely specific to the original location. This bed comprises a headboard, food board, two siderails and a wooden frame and is lacking the hardware. In the catalogue illustration, both the head and foot boards are shown vertically oriented. The present configuration of the frame displays the headboard raised of the floor on the horizontal plane. This is clearly the intention of the designer based on the configuration of the various framed elements. The siderails (not illustrated in the catalogue) are covered in a reddish-brown velours upholstery with wooden feet. The upholstered elements with minor losses, abrasions and wear consistent with regular use. The head and foot boards are consistent in coloration and show very minor evidence of sun exposure. The wooden bed frame with minor discoloration, scratches and signs of regular use, all of which are not visible once the bed is properly installed. The frame of the bed measures 72 ½ inches in length, sized to accommodate a California King size mattress. The total over length of the bed including the footboard measures 88 1/2 inches. A rare intact bed designed by Powell to appear on the auction market. Both the head and foot boards with wonderful intricate figuring and beautiful organic shape. The feet present with a contrasting chipped wood finish. Please contact the department for complete measurements and additional photographs of the elements of the bed not shown in the catalogue illustration.
