Description

  • Philip Powell
  • Pair of doors
  • walnut, mirrorred glass, lacquered and gilt wood

Provenance

Commissioned directly from the artist
Thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Overall in very good condition. These two doors were commissioned directly from the artist and made for a site specific installation. The front of the doors with wonderful contouring and are highly sculptural when viewed in person. Powell designed the board in a manner that retained the original qualities of the wood minor to production, including natural fissures, knots and striations. The raised elements around the knots of the wood further accentuate the natural qualities of the wood selected. There are ten giltwood detalings that add to character of the design. There is one stable age crack on the proper left door measuring three inches in length adjacent to one of the knots. The reverse of the doors are painted in vivid red paint often seen in Paul Evans works. The proper left door is fitted with a minor and freeform shelf. The doors retain their original hinges which show oxidation from age. A wonderful deeply sculptural design by Powell.
