Description

  • wood, paper
comprising fourteen Bodhi leaves, each finely painted in ink and watercolor with Buddhist figures, mounted opposite sutra text written in gold ink on blue paper, the opening four album leaves inscribed wuliangshou fo (Amitabha Buddha), the title page painted and inscribed in gold ink with a dedication wishing long life to the emperor, the end leaf inscribed yuzhi (made by imperial order) followed by a couplet proclaiming the longevity of the empire and the endurance of Buddhist teaching, (2)

Condition

The album appears to be incomplete with only a portion of the Amitabha Sutra. There is a loss to the title slip, some leaves of the accordion style mounting are separated. Some leaves have wormage, wear to the corners and edges, there is wear and staining to the blue pages and wear to the gold pigments. The bodhi leaves themselves appear to be in good overall condition. The tips of some leaves are pieced from parts of another leaf, but this appears to have happened during manufacture.
