Catalogue Note

The style of the tiara and smaller ears point to the head belonging to a Daoist attendant figure rather than a Buddhist bodhisattva.  A hallmark of the bodhisattva image is long pendulous earlobes.  For examples of Song and Yuan dynasty female attendant figures, see Chai Zejun and Chai Yumei, Shanxi gudai caisu (Ancient Stucco Sculptures of Shanxi), Beijing, 2008, pp. 236-242, 244-247 and 264-267.
