  • Gilt copper alloy
seated in lalitasana on an antelope skin, atop a double plinth incised with foliate motif, heavy jeweled earrings and long black tresses cascading down the back, the right hand raised to the ear, the left hand in samadhi mudra, the upper and lower robes incised with decorative patterning at the hems, with sealed baseplate

Condition

Areas of heavy accretion and traces of wax overall, could benefit from a light cleaning. With traces of polychroming to the hair. Missing attribute in the left hand. Baseplate sealed but not original.

Catalogue Note

The late William Segal (1904–2000) was a magazine publisher, artist, practicing Buddhist, and friend to many important artists, writers, and visionaries of the 20th century including Ken Burns, G.I. Gurdieff and D.T. Suzuki. His wife, the late Marielle Bancou-Segal (1921-2015), was an international stylist, textile designer, painter, set designer and author, and published William's posthumous autobiography A Voice at the Borders of Silence in 2003.
