Collet-set with a glass intaglio depicting the scene of 'Pygmalion and Galatéa' within a later torçade border of seed pearls and circular-cut rubies, detachable pin, engraved Girodet Triosson Pinx. Beltrami Inc. 1818, Italian assay and maker's marks, may be worn as a pendant.

Similar glass intaglios were reproduced by Giovanni Beltrami (1770­-1854) from the collection of Count Giovanni­ Battista Sommariva (1760-­1826). The scene of 'Pygmalion and Galatéa' is taken from a painting by Anne ­Louis Girodet completed in 1813 and later exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1819, now part of the Louvre Museum's collection.

Condition

Rubies of Burmese origin cannot be imported into the US; this piece may contain a ruby of Burmese origin and therefore may not be able to be imported into the US. Stamped 750 for 18 carat gold. Italian maker's mark for Alexandria. Partially inscribed Sommariva Poss. Rubies of purplish red with typical inclusions visible under magnification. Seed pearls of dark cream colour, low lustre. Scratches to intaglio and metal consistent with age and wear.
